Extensive alterations, refurbishments and renovation to the grade I listed Georgian mansion, Tyringham Hall. The contract included: 2 pairs of semi-detached houses, a terrace of single Storey Properties called the ‘Red Brick Cottages’. A two storey dwelling named the ‘The White House’, a wonderful stable block, stable buildings and surrounding Courtyard and finally the bathing and music temples.
Background:
Tyringham Hall was built between 1792-97 by the Architect Sir John Soane, it was one of the largest country villa’s Soane designed and built and therefore English Heritage deem the Hall a Grade I listed building.
The house was radically altered during the first decade of the 20th century and virtually all of Soane’s interiors were replaced by ones in French Baroque style. This period of work which includes the Copper dome is all Grade II listed.
The large formal gardens, entrance forecourt, pavilions and pools were created by the Edwardian Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, between 1924 and 1928, this is all Grade II listed.
During 2001 the Hall had become empty after a period of use as a Complimentary Treatment Centre, it was bought by a private client and Pauley Ltd were employed to carry out a complete refurbishment of the whole site, which was done over the following 4/5 years.
The work briefly consisted; refurbishment of the Grade I Hall and wing, demolition of the indoor hall and pool. Refurbishment of the Bathing and Music Temple, including surrounding areas. The refurbishment of 2 pairs of red brick semi-detached cottages together with a terrace of single storey stone barns.
A further two storey dwelling was also to be refurbished as part of the scheme. The refurbishment of the stable block and its courtyard, which is a mixture of single and two storey stone-built buildings.
All new services and supplies bought into the site to facilitate the new use.
As a result Pauley Ltd were delighted to receive a commendation from English Heritage for the work it produced and were also awarded the Plaisterers Trophy for outstanding fibrous plastering work on the main Hall.
